What is Build-A-Ruler? Build-A-Ruler is a 6-inch graduated ruler that students can "build". The ruler is actually 4 rulers: a halves ruler, a fourths ruler, an eighths ruler, and a sixteenths ruler. The rulers are connected by a hinge, allowing students to snap down the rulers and learn about halves, fourths, eighths, and sixteenths in progression. Students fan the ruler out, as shown above, to look at a single ruler at a time. They can continue to snap all the rulers into place, as shown in the above animation, to see the completed ruler. Build-A-Ruler is made in the USA, molded from durable plastic. Color combinations will vary. The Build-A-Ruler's dimensions measure 2 1/2" heighth by 6 3/16" width by 1/2" depth.

Why is Build-A-Ruler needed? Students' scores in Measurement Concepts are low and are moving even lower. Current curriculums do not address the difficulties with teaching and learning measurement. Traditional rulers confuse fractional parts and do not distinguish 1/2 from 1/4 from 1/8 from 1/16. Measuring concepts are critical as the foundation for teaching fractions, whole and mixed numbers, lowest terms, and a variety of other topics from the 2nd through the 8th grade. Teaching measurement concepts has traditionally required an inordinate amount of individual student attention and instruction time which is generally not available to the modern teacher.

What does Build-A-Ruler achieve? Build A-Ruler is a hands-on approach to teaching the key mathematical concepts of measurement, equivalent fractions, and whole and mixed numbers. It utilizes all learning styles including auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Build-A-Ruler allows students to draw with a pencil down its indented lines to easily show equivalent fractions. This product plainly shows that the more pieces a ruler is divided into, the smaller the pieces get (i.e. 1/16 is less than 1/2).
